Google I/O 2025 dates confirmed: Gemini, AI, Android 16 and other announcements expected

 Highlights

Google could announce the Android 16 stable version at I/O 2025.

We could also get announcements regarding Project Moohan, Wear OS 6, and more.

The standout could be updates to Gemini AI.

Google has announced the I/O 2025 dates. It’s a two-day event that will start on May 20th. The company tends to reveal new software products, some close to being ready to ship while others moonshot. In this year’s I/O developers conference, Google could announce more updates to Gemini, and also other AI products it is developing. We could also witness the unveiling of Android 16. Here is everything expected.

Google I/O 2025 dates, venue

Google I/O 2025 will be held on May 20th and May 21st.
The location of the event remains Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California, where Google has its headquarters. You can attend it in person. You can register for I/O 2025 starting today.
It will be live-streamed via Google’s YouTube channel.

Google I/O 2025 expected announcements

Google says there will be “keynotes and sessions” on day one and “breakout sessions, workshops, demos, networking opportunities and more” on day two.

It’s easy to guess that Google will spend significant time on Gemini and how AI is integrated to enhance the experience on Google’s suite of apps like Gmail, Docs, Maps, etc.

The company has already rolled out Gemini 2.0 to the public. Inside the Gemini chatbot, you can choose Gemini 2.0 Flash (general purpose), Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental (multi-step reasoning; somewhat like how Deepseek works), Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking Experiment with apps (Reasoning across YouTube, Search, and Maps). So, Google would explain these or highlight other products it is working on.

Android 16 is expected to achieve platform stability in March 2025 and therefore Google could announce what’s new on Android 16. We could also learn the eligible devices for this update. This may include devices from leading smartphone makers.

Following this, we could get some announcements regarding Wear OS 6 for smartwatches.

Another highlight could be Android XR, Google’s new OS for extended/mixed reality headsets (codenamed Project Moohan). This is made in partnership with Samsung and Qualcomm.

Pixel 9a is expected to be announced in March and so, we wonder what hardware announcements may happen at I/O.
For developers and partners, there may be some updates around the cloud and web as demand for cloud infrastructure and server space has increased with AI development.
